Senior Embedded Systems Engineer

Reports to: Staff Software Engineer

Position Summary: Responsible for the proper application of technologies and processes to our product offerings to ensure we create the highest quality and most reliable, innovative products on the market. Will regularly mentor and develop the knowledge base of other less seasoned technical professionals, and will stay abreast of new technology affecting the industry. Requires knowledge and experience in structured hardware and software architecture, design, and development; as well as an excellent understanding of digital electronics, sensors, control algorithms and fault-tolerant control systems.

Primary Objective: The Senior Embedded Systems Engineer will be responsible for the technical/team leadership of the design of all hardware activities related platform system development of future (FAST.) products.

Position Responsibilities:
  • The primary responsibility of this position will be to perform a variety of hardware development lifecycle activities on various projects and programs while complying with various product development processes.
  • Will follow the developments in the hardware engineering discipline and recommend improvements in processes based on industry trends.
  • Working with the Staff Software Engineer, you will support hardware selection, procurement, and qualification.
  • Will lead the coordination of hardware/software integration activities. Support Quality Assurance (QA) with the planning and execution of their activities.
  • Will create hardware requirements for various projects, and support those requirements through the creation of design artifacts.
  • Will work on assigned change requests and defects related to platform architecture. For assigned defects, provide accurate root-cause analysis and impact analysis to QA.
  • Will provide hardware design/technical specifications to external design partners. Act as key technical interface to vendors who supply hardware solutions and support services such as EMI/EMC certification.
  • Consistently keep up with hardware/system technology changes in the industry and provide ideas for product improvement/evolution/revolution.

Knowledge, Skills, and Ability Requirements:

  • The preferred candidate will have BSEE and an MSCS. An MSEE is also acceptable, but the candidate must have a good understanding and demonstrable experience in firmware/software development and methodologies.
  • A minimum of 10 years of hardware development experience is required.
    • Experience in developing controls for high EMI/RFI environments is required.
  • A very good understanding of hardware and software integration, architectural, and design issues, and the ability to determine throughput and timing type issues is essential.
  • A strong knowledge of using bus analyzers and scopes to determine hardware/software integration type issues is necessary.
  • Excellent knowledge of imaging system type hardware and various graphics cards technology is desired. The ability to debug hardware issues that lead to image quality type issues is important.
  • Knowledge of storage solutions such as NAND/NOR FLASH, SD, etc is very helpful.
  • Excellent knowledge of PCI, PCI Express, Ethernet, USB, Firewire, and other data interfaces, as well as knowledge of DVI, SDI, LVDS, and other video interfaces is essential.
  • A strong knowledge of Windows or Linux driver development and system level knowledge of Microsoft/Linux OS is highly desired.
  • The ability to reduce an overwhelming amount of information into a few salient issues to focus on, with the ability to prioritize the most relevant from all other issues is necessary.
  • Must be a self starter with the initiative to follow through on programs/projects and work with all levels of individuals, as well as have the ability to coordinate efforts both inside and outside of the Group.
  • A demonstrated ability to lead teams in successfully completing programs/projects, while also serving as a key individual technical contributor is essential.
  • Must place great value on continuous learning and building knowledge.
  • Very effective oral and written communication skills are vital.
  • Must be highly driven to achieve results and aggressively identify and solve problems that can impact the scheduled delivery of products/releases. Must be accustomed to effectively dealing with unforeseen crises with quick analysis and decisive action.

Senior Hardware Design Engineer

FAST is seeking a Senior Hardware Design Engineer for their Embedded Hardware Design Group. Candidate is expected to be a key contributor in the architecture, design, and implementation of microcontroller based systems.

Candidate must possess the analytical skills related to designing products for the restaurant industry. Technical knowledge in motor controls, RF technology, communication networks, and graphical interfaces are desired. The candidate is expected to use solid engineering practices in specifying and documenting all phases of the work.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Plans, conducts and directs engineering research and development projects.
  • In depth experience with embedded microprocessor based design techniques and peripherals.
  • Practical knowledge of C programming for embedded systems.
  • Working knowledge of RF for Zigee, Bluetooth and WiFi applications.
  • Practical knowledge of processor systems supporting Linux, VxWorks, etc.
  • Hands-on working knowledge of instrumentation and control engineering.
  • In depth knowledge of various standard network communication topologies, including Ethernet, I2C, RS232, RS485/422, TCP/IP and CAN/LIN Bus.
  • Working knowledge of proportional feedback control systems.
  • Design of AC and DC motor controllers using PID methodologies.
  • Familiarity with different types of display technologies such as, VFD, LCD, and graphic LCD.
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills.
  • Provide mentoring for other hardware engineers.

Position Requirements:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering, MS preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of Electrical Engineering experience

Staff Software Engineer

Reports to: VP Engineering

Position Summary:
Under the general direction of the Vice President, the Staff Software Engineer will carry out or direct the development of complex and novel assignments including those requiring the development of new or improved products, techniques or procedures. The Staff Software Engineer will be responsible for the proper application of technologies and processes to our product offerings to ensure we create the highest quality and most reliable, innovative products on the market. They will regularly mentor and develop the knowledge base of other less seasoned technical professionals, and will stay abreast of new technology affecting the industry. The job will require extensive knowledge and experience in structured software architecture, design, and coding, as well as digital electronics, sensors, control algorithms and fault tolerant control systems.

Primary Objective:
With primary focus on software design, structure, and implementation, and a good knowledge of hardware design, the Staff Software Engineer is considered a technical authority in the development and deployment of the technologies needed to bring new and innovative products to market.

Position Responsibilities:
Responsibilities for this job will include: leading internal or external designs and evaluations that support the development of new and very advanced concepts in all areas of Quick Serve Restaurant functions including asset tracking, cooking, serving, and HACCP monitoring and reporting; developing and owning product technology strategy and design structure; assisting in creating product development and top-level product documentation to meet enterprise goals; designing and developing embedded software for both feasibility and final design; creating detailed design documentation and system analysis/performance assessments; creating detailed verification and validation plans; leading, developing and implementing design characterization or design verification strategy for efficient, complete, and robust testing through report completion and anomaly resolution or independently perform tolerance, error budget or other design analysis by extending or adapting existing methodologies; leading the establishment of design requirements from Voice of the Customer, and translate into objective and meaningful lower level engineering requirements including those of a complex or difficult nature using Agile and Iterative development methodologies; acting as the interface between the product development team and the legal team in areas of intellectual property landscape, invention disclosures, invention disclosure expansion and patent application filings; and, finally, assisting with conformance to (FAST.) design control policies to ensure product quality through the technical review of the work products of other team members and projects.

Knowledge, Skills, and Ability Requirements:

  • BSEE/CS or equivalent. BSEE + MSCS strongly preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in developing low-level or embedded projects and 5+ years working in embedded SW creating platforms in Embedded Linux or Windows Embedded.
  • Strong problem solving, interpersonal, verbal, and written communications skills
  • Excellent C and Java skills
  • Prior system level Linux programming or mobile device development experience
  • Self-motivated and work effectively across different functional teams
  • Experience with platform bring-up, multimedia subsystem, 2D/3D graphics or I/O peripherals is a plus; Linux or Windows Embedded device driver creation a plus
  • Excellent knowledge of networking protocols, especially 802.11 and 802.15.4
  • The ability to reduce an overwhelming amount of information into a few salient issues to focus on, with the ability to prioritize the most relevant from all other issues is necessary.
  • Experience with using defect tracking and configuration management system is desired.
  • Must place great value on continuous learning and building knowledge.
  • The ability to believe in her/his ability to successfully take on new and difficult challenges, question the status quo, and take risks is necessary.
  • Ability to adopt technologies and products, manufactured by others, into the FAST/SCK product offerings.
  • Supervisory/project/team management experience required.
