Project Leader | Senior Hardware Design Engineer | Senior Embedded Software Engineer

Project Leader

Based in Stratford CT, Food Automation – Service Techniques, Inc. (FAST), www.fastinc.com, is the leading manufacturer of appliance controls specially developed for use in the foodservice industry. We have an immediate need for a Project Leader who will provide leadership and build commitment among the team for the timely and accurate execution of a project.

Reporting directly to the Director, New Product Introduction, your responsibilities will include:

  • Execute & maintain all required documents to initiate and track the project to conclusion.
  • Through organization, definition, planning, implementation, and control, you will manage the execution of projects including schedule, product costs and program budget.
  • Extensively interface cross-functionally with Sales, Marketing and Product Management, Finance, Engineering, Sourcing, Quality and Manufacturing to execute projects.
  • Provide on going status communications to all stakeholders and offer remedial advice for projects not proceeding according to plan.
  • Ensure all cross-functional teams are given the opportunity to address specific deliverables, risks and dependencies that are associated with new products in order to assess required level of effort and timeline.
  • Coordinate technical support activities for new products.
  • Ensure that NPI projects meet customer specifications, target costs, schedules, and approved budgets.

Position requirements:

  • BS degree or equivalent work experience (BS Engineering a plus).
  • 5 years experience and a proven track record in leading teams and engineering projects through full design cycles without direct formal control, or certification in project management with 2 years minimum experience
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, Visio and Project required.
  • Accomplished business professional who possesses superior issue-resolution skills related to both process and people.
  • Detail oriented, organized, and possess excellent follow-up skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and function under pressure to meet tight deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent teamwork skills
  • Electronics industry experience a plus.

Senior Hardware Design Engineer

FAST is seeking a Senior Hardware Design Engineer for their Embedded Hardware Design Group. Candidate is expected to be a key contributor in the architecture, design, and implementation of microcontroller based systems.

Candidate must possess the analytical skills related to designing products for the restaurant industry. Technical knowledge in motor controls, RF technology, communication networks, and graphical interfaces are desired. The candidate is expected to use solid engineering practices in specifying and documenting all phases of the work.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Plans, conducts and directs engineering research and development projects.
  • In depth experience with embedded microprocessor based design techniques and peripherals.
  • Practical knowledge of C programming for embedded systems.
  • Working knowledge of RF for Zigee, Bluetooth and WiFi applications.
  • Practical knowledge of processor systems supporting Linux, VxWorks, etc.
  • Hands-on working knowledge of instrumentation and control engineering.
  • In depth knowledge of various standard network communication topologies, including Ethernet, I2C, RS232, RS485/422, TCP/IP and CAN/LIN Bus.
  • Working knowledge of proportional feedback control systems.
  • Design of AC and DC motor controllers using PID methodologies.
  • Familiarity with different types of display technologies such as, VFD, LCD, and graphic LCD.
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills.
  • Provide mentoring for other hardware engineers.

Position Requirements:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering, MS preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of Electrical Engineering experience

Senior Embedded Software Engineer

Based in Stratford CT, FAST, Inc is the industry leader in the creation of custom and semi-custom control solutions for commercial kitchen equipment manufacturers. If you’ve ever eaten in a fast food restaurant, school cafeteria, or other eating establishment, chances are at some point the food was processed using one of our controllers.

Our Engineering Team has an immediate need for an experienced software engineer with the following qualifications:

  • BS or MS in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or EE.
  • 5+ years experience.
  • Experience programming in C/C++ for embedded systems; Visual Basic and/or Java a plus.
  • Knowledge and skills in the use of real-time operating systems on embedded devices.
  • An understanding of quality development practices, including product design, code design, engineering techniques, etc.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to grasp new technologies and react to changes in a fast-paced environment.
  • Good analytical and debugging skills.
  • Understanding of electrical systems a plus.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Design and build embedded software applications for use on 8bit and 16bit microcontrollers, both individually and in collaboration with other software engineers.
  • Follow department standards and procedures for development of good software.
  • Utilize programming skills and knowledge in a variety of development environments.
  • Use various tools to test, debug and verify software designs.
  • Contribute new insight into methods of development, validation, and release of software.
  • Draw on skills for troubleshooting to solve problems.
  • Work hands-on with embedded circuits during the course of development of products.

Reporting directly to the President/CEO, your responsibilities will include:

  • Direct continuous improvement activities to achieve world class performance on key metrics
  • Plan and direct all aspects of the organization’s operational policies, objectives and initiatives

  • Knowledge of engineering, documentation, manufacturing methods and systems, drawings, bills of material, routings, lean manufacturing, quality systems, inventory systems, team building, problem solving, motivational techniques and shop floor safety are required.
  • Wireless device manufacturing, test, and certification.
  • Knowledge of ISO, Lean and continuous improvement concepts

Director of Supply Chain and Materials Management

Reporting directly to the VP Operations, your responsibilities will include:

  • Develop and maintain the Master Production Schedule.
  • Provide leadership to production planning for the manufacturing facility and any out-sourced assemblies.
  • Lead activities to improve Receiving, Material storage and inventory control
  • Develop processes to improve inventory levels that provide increased asset turnover consistent with efficient support of manufacturing activities and purchasing economies.
  • Execute the research and evaluation of domestic and foreign suppliers for new and existing materials.
  • Initiate and implement plans for continuous improvement of the Procurement System.
  • Liaise with suppliers to maintain interest in company requirements in order to maximize qualified sources of high quality material at lowest possible cost.
  • Lead and support contract negotiations as necessary.
  • Control expenditures.
  • Select, train, and mentor subordinates.
  • Develop improved and/or new computerized materials data management and analysis systems.
  • Provide material timely estimates for new sales proposals.

Credentials will include:

  • BS degree minimum; MBA preferred
  • APICS certification a plus
  • Minimum 10 years experience in Materials Management
  • Excellent PC skills, specifically with Excel
  • Minimum four years experience with offshore sourcing direct to manufacturers
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills

Information Technology Manager

To support our growth we are seeking an individual to provide direction for our IT systems, including management of high risk projects that have significant outcome on customer experience. The Manager will also be responsible for managing outside consultants dedicated to our equipment support initiatives, and network coordination.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Provide leadership of the department and plans for systems growth and integration
  • Review current architecture and propose changes/improvements
  • Maintain user groups for assurance that needs are met within the various departments world wide
  • Experience with Microsoft Active directory and Windows 2000/2003 servers, Exchange 2000/2003, Microsoft SQL server 2000/2005, MySQL, terminal services, Windows 95/98/2000/XP, Symantec Backup Exec, Symantec Antivirus Server, MS Office suite of products, Sage Mass 500 and ACT! contact management database program
  • Manage the PBX phone system (Nortel Networks) and corporate-wide smart phones
  • Development and maintenance of desktop standards
  • Support of PC hardware platforms.

Essential Qualifications:

  • BS degree in a computer-related field with a minimum of five years related experience
  • Prior technology manufacturing experience, particularly in labeling, and MRP systems
  • Previous experience in a software development role
  • Strong written, oral communication, and listening skills
  • Strong hardware knowledge and an understanding of Intel-based server hardware, peripheral connectivity and compatibility including printers, print servers and all associate network and local devices
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service, analytical/problem-solving, problem management, and presentation development skills
  • Proven ability in conflict management and resolution
  • Knowledge of Linux operation systems and VOIP technologies
